ABSTRACT
The thesis deals with students’ behaviors, attitudes, and awareness in the writing
class. In particular, the writer figures out what students' behaviors in writing class,
attitudes to writing, and their awareness of the role of writing are and what can be done to
improve them. The writer conducted an investigation on both teachers and freshmen in
FFL at HUI. Three research instruments were combined to collect data. They were
questionnaires, interview, and observation. The English majors were found with both
positive behaviors and negative behaviors, both positive attitudes and negative attitudes,
and relatively vague awareness of the roles of writing. The number of students with
positive behaviors and approving attitudes was superior. Recommendations for the study
were made from both teachers and learners. Therefore, the agreement of some
recommendations between two groups of participants was considered. Motivators in
learning writing including interesting topics, groupwork and pairwork activities, teachers’
encouragement, study progress, and communication desire were analyzed. Some of the
motivating factors were clarified how to apply in the teaching process. In addition,
classroom management techniques were suggested to solve unexpected problems related
to misbehaviors and negative attitudes. The study indicates that building students’ interest
in learning is the principle for solving problems related to behaviors, attitudes, and
awareness.
