Abstract
The research investigated some common methods used in English vocabulary learning by non-English majored students at IUH and their difficulties in vocabulary learning. The study aimed to suggest effective vocabulary learning methods for the students. One hundred and twenty students from different faculties were selected as the participants of this study. They took a vocabulary test and completed a questionnaire. The study found out that students obtained a modest amount of vocabulary despite using a range of methods to learn English vocabulary, namely translation, using offline dictionary, listening to English song and watching movies. Some quoted difficulties and obstacles were limited instructional time, lack of opportunities to use English outside the classroom context, and lack of reading strategies. The study suggested that the application of technical devices to learn vocabulary could improve students’ motivation and increase the number of new words that students would like to learn.
